Musa : Holographic Botanicals

May 24, 2022 by joelzika

This work formed part of ‘Botanica : Contemporary Art Outside’ at the Brisbane City Botanic Gardens. A collaboration between myself and James Voller from Collide Public Art Initiative. This amazing show presented by the Museum of Brisbane runs nightly May 20- 29th, 2022. We used unique holographic display technology to create these beautiful interpretations of wild banana species (Musa) which used to inhabit this part of Queensland. https://www.brisbane.qld.gov.au/things-to-see-and-do/whats-on-and-events/botanica-contemporary-art-outside #hologram, #publicart, #digitalart, #heritage, #brisbane, #botanical

Tracing Place : Augmented Reality Installation

February 26, 2022 by joelzika

Documentation of the Installation ‘Tracing Place’ by artists Lucy Allinson and Michaela McHugh for Geelong Design Week 2022. The work was produced by artistic director Joel Zika and Collide Public Arts who helped combine the artists practice of sculpture, sound, spoken word, photography and painting. The result is an interactive work using an atomised water screen that reacted in real-time to field recordings of the natural environment. Dark Mofo Dome

November 1, 2019 by joelzika

I’ve been working with Moth Design on a commission for the Dark Mofo festival in Hobart, Tasmania. Moth built the amazing dome space with reflective tables bespoke viewing platforms. The two-hour video work was projected via 8 projectors across the 10m dome and accompanied by a sound score by Fascinator.  The work ran from 10pm – 4am throughout the festival with a live audiovisual set from myself and Fascinator at midnight on the final Saturday.   Further info at https://www.drinkstrade.com.au/event/asahi-dome-dark-mofo-2019 […]

Geelong After Dark

August 11, 2017 by joelzika

With the help of Simeon Taylor I built a interactive projection that revealed a lost piece of Geelong’s architectural history.   We used an htc vive inverted to create virtual flashlights that people could use to explore the augmented 3d sculptures I’d built.   The work took place during Geelong’s After Dark festival.

NightLights Projection Commission

August 11, 2017 by joelzika

I took on the challenge of building content for Australia’s largest permanent projection screen in the town of Wagga Wagga. It was the third in a series of artists curated to produce content for the 3 storey canvas that covers the cities council buildings. The work will be on show throughout July, check out the video below.   And this article about it http://www.riverinaleader.com.au/story/4777899/night-light-sculptures-put-wagga-on-permanent-display/

A Southern Dark Ride

August 11, 2016 by joelzika

In June of 2016, artist Joel Zika built an animated installation in a historic ghost train in Oxford Alabama. Using projection mapping designed specifically for this unusual space. Original props were removed and the darkened tunnels were used to build a new immersive space. Whilst developing the work the entire ride experience was captured using ultra low light cameras for a full 360 immersive experience. The result is a 2 minute ride experience into the artwork and this hybrid multimedia […]

Rue and Co Projections

May 6, 2014 by joelzika

I have been commissioned to create a large scale projection work for a new eating precinct in downtown Melbourne.  Rue & Co is situated at 80 Collins st Melbourne and features shipping container eateries from Kong, Jimmy Grants, and St Ali. The work is massive and sits across from a equally enormous piece from Melbourne artist Rone. A big thanks to Sean Healy (Skynoise) for his production design on this work. It is open 7 Days a week and visible at night (there’s food there […]
